The Zaouia Moulay Idriss in Fes

In Fes, nearby the Nejjarine Square, is the Zaouia Moulay Idriss. In this very old mausoleum rests the man considered as the founding father of the city: Moulay Idriss II (793 – 828).

In the centre of Fes, not far from the Attarine souk (an Arab market), you can find the monument where Moulay Idriss II rests. It is one of the most ancient buildings of the city. This king’s tomb – who is considered as the founding father of Fes – is one of the most beautiful historical sites of this city. Built in the Xth century and renovated several times, this mausoleum spreads over 2,548 m2 and is commonly called “Zaouia Moulay Idriss”.
