In Meknes, you will find many monuments that witness its rich and eventful past. Among them is Hri Souani Royal granary from the 17th century. Rent a car and discover the Northern region of Fez and Meknes.
Moulay Ismail ordered the construction of Hri Souani in the 17th century: huge granaries located 500m from the Royal Palace in Meknes. Divided in various rooms, the biggest is 26 meters long, 10 meters wide and 9 meters high, the building has thick 4-meter walls which allow the rooms to maintain an optimum and constant temperature for food preservation. Granaries are equipped with small wells which used to serve for water supplies and the leveling of Souani's pond.
Nowadays, the rooms are empty but they are used for many events and sometimes even as a set for historic movies. Indeed, some scenes from “The Last Temptation of the Christ” or “Jesus of Nazareth” were filmed there. Therefore, we can imagine the historic and mysterious atmosphere of this place.
