Nestled in a sheltered cove along the northern coast of Morocco, Matadero Beach (Playa del Matadero) is one of Al Hoceima’s best-kept secrets. With its calm waters, friendly atmosphere and views over the rugged Rif Mountains, it is the perfect spot to slow down and enjoy the Mediterranean at its most peaceful. Whether you are in the mood for a quick swim, a family day out or simply soaking up the sun away from the crowds, Matadero Beach is a place worth discovering.
Just a short walk from the centre of Al Hoceima, Matadero Beach offers a calm and scenic escape from the city buzz. Its name, which translates as “slaughterhouse beach” from Spanish, might raise a few eyebrows. But don’t let that put you off. Today, the beach is all charm. You’ll find smooth golden sand, clear turquoise water and a peaceful setting tucked between protective cliffs.
Matadero has become a favourite with local families and travellers who prefer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere than what you might find at the city’s main beach. Whether you’re coming for a quick dip or an afternoon with a book, it’s a lovely place to spend time by the sea.
What makes Matadero Beach so appealing is its unhurried, laid-back vibe. The beach is small and cosy, which gives it a friendly, intimate feel. The water is usually calm, making it great for swimming, especially for children. The sand is soft and clean, and there is plenty of space to lie down, picnic or simply enjoy the view.
Because of its sheltered position, Matadero is also less windy than many other beaches in the region. This makes it ideal if you are looking to sunbathe without the constant breeze. The cliffs that frame the bay give the beach a sense of privacy, almost like a hidden cove in the middle of the city.
In the late afternoon, the light turns golden and warm. It is a perfect moment for a walk along the shore, or just to sit quietly and watch the waves roll in. If you are travelling through the Rif or simply need a break from sightseeing, Matadero Beach is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the calm.
While Matadero Beach itself doesn’t have a promenade packed with restaurants, you will find several good options within walking distance.
Café Port de Pêche offers fresh grilled fish and simple Moroccan dishes in a casual setting near the small fishing port.
Restaurant L’Esturgeon is a favourite among locals, known for generous seafood platters and friendly service. It is a relaxed spot with a view.
Hôtel Souani is just a few minutes away by car. It has direct beach access and offers a comfortable place to stay if you are planning to spend the night nearby.
Café Les Platanes is a nice stop in town for mint tea or an ice cream break after a swim.
If you are after something quick and easy, small kiosks sometimes appear during the summer months near the beach entrance, selling snacks and drinks.
Getting there: Matadero Beach is about a 15-minute walk from the centre of Al Hoceima, making it easy to reach on foot if you’re staying nearby. It is also just a few minutes by car. Taxis are affordable and widely available throughout the city, so getting to the beach is rarely a problem. If you are arriving by air, the nearest major airport is in Nador, around two and a half hours away by car. From there, you can reach Al Hoceima by taxi or rental car, following a scenic drive through the Rif mountains.
What to bring: You won’t find any sunbeds, umbrellas or beach facilities here, so it’s a good idea to come prepared. Bring your own towel, a beach mat or chair, and some form of shade if you plan to spend a few hours. There are no shops right on the beach, so pack water, snacks and plenty of sunscreen, especially if you’re visiting in summer.
Best time to visit: The beach tends to be at its quietest in the morning, which makes it a great time to enjoy the calm and take a peaceful swim. In the late afternoon, the light softens and the cliffs cast long shadows across the sand, creating a lovely setting for a walk or a photo.
Safety: The sea is usually gentle here, which is part of the beach’s appeal, but it’s still important to stay alert. There are no lifeguards on site, so always keep an eye on children if they’re swimming or playing near the water. Don't leave your belongings unattended either.
Cleanliness: Matadero Beach is generally well-kept thanks to respectful locals and visitors. However, rubbish bins can be limited or full, especially in high season. To help keep the area clean, take your waste with you when you leave.
After a relaxing moment by the sea, it is well worth exploring what lies just beyond the sand :
Quemado Beach: Just around the corner, this is one of Al Hoceima’s most popular spots. Quemado is livelier than Matadero, with cafés and restaurants lining the seafront. It is a great place to enjoy a drink with a view of the bay, especially as the sun begins to set over the horizon.
Al Hoceima Marina: A bustling area, especially in the late afternoon. You can watch the fishing boats come and go, sit down for freshly grilled fish in a waterside restaurant or simply wander along the docks and soak up the local atmosphere.
Moro Viejo Corniche: This charming promenade offers panoramic views over the Mediterranean. The walk is easy and peaceful, and the scenery is especially beautiful in the golden light of the evening. A perfect spot for photos of the cliffs and the rooftops of the city.
Al Hoceima National Park: Just outside the city, the park offers a refreshing break from the beach. With quiet coves, rugged hills and unspoilt nature, it is perfect for a short hike, a birdwatching session or simply some time surrounded by the wild landscapes of the Rif.
Tala Youssef Beach: Smaller and more rugged than Matadero or Quemado, this beach is ideal for visitors in search of peace and quiet. With its raw, natural setting, it feels far from the busier parts of town, yet remains easily accessible.
Al Hoceima’s Local Market: Not very large but full of colour and energy. This is the place to find regional produce, taste something new or simply get a feel for daily life in the city. The stalls are colourful, the smells are rich and the experience is authentically Moroccan.
Summer Boat Tours: A favourite activity during the warmer months. Local fishermen often offer boat rides along the coast, taking you to secret coves, hidden beaches and steep cliffs. It is one of the best ways to admire the beauty of Al Hoceima from the water.
Matadero Beach is the kind of place you might stumble upon and remember fondly. Quiet, unpretentious and full of charm, it is ideal for anyone wanting to experience a more peaceful side of the Moroccan coast. Bring a good book, your camera and a towel. You may end up staying longer than planned.
